Just an hour’s train ride out of Barcelona is the Montserrat Monastery. Meaning “serrated mountain,” Monserrat reminded us of Big Bear, California with its towering boulders and crazy rock formations. The monastery itself is nestled nicely into the rocks and is not only a popular pilgrimage site for over a thousand years it has some pretty great hiking trails for families. We purchased a combined train ticket that also gave us unlimited rides on the 2 funiculars at the monastery which means most hiking can be done going downhill! We visited Sacred Cave, which is where the Black Madonna statue was originally found up in the hilltop caves and also took an enjoyable walk from the top of the mountain back down to the monastery. The kids did their fair share of complaining about being in nature and having to walk so much but a cafeteria lunch and ice cream for dessert quieted them down. A small bottle of wine shared between me and Tim added to the mountain top experience.
