I’ve written several times about the fabulous city of Prague and I can’t deny that it’s my go-to “Wow em” city when visitors come to our home in Bavaria. Part of the draw is checking off another country while visiting Europe but I have to say Prague Old Towne offers one of the most unforgettable first impressions. My sister and I took off around 10am which put us at the Zlicin metro station just after noon. We parked at the large shopping mall near IKEA and bought our cheap 3 euro (110 kc) all-day transportation passes which gets us unlimited use on buses, trolleys, trams and the metro.
Our first stop was the Old Towne to see the Astronomical Clock, Tynn church and the Jan Hus Memorial. We often rely on the Rick Steves guidebook to give a good general overview. This time, we simply enjoyed the crowds and architecture with our uneducated eyes. At 1pm we watched the clock do it’s “On the Hour” show and listened to the trumpeters announce the new hour.
From Old Towne we walked through the Jewish Quarter was which packed with day trippers making their way through the oldest synagogue and the Jewish cemetery with its topsy-turvy grave stones piled high on top of each other. Once we made our way down the cobblestone streets we walked along the river’s edge to cross Charles Bridge up to the Castle Quarter. The views from the top of the hill were filled with red-tiled roofs and copper green domes of the churches in the distance. We slowly meandered in front of the state buildings and stopped into St Vitus Cathedral for a quick peak at the Mucha stained glass window. We topped off our day with a great meal at Olympia, our favorite restaurant.
